EastSide Guide
What to See and Where to Go
Local landmarks include the beautiful Eastside courthouse.
Built in 1929 and still in use today, the Spanish Moor "palace" contains wrought iron chandeliers, hand-painted ceilings, large murals, and imported tile. You even get a 360-degree view of the city from the courthouse tower!
What's more, there's usually a concert or festival taking place on the lawn for everyone's entertainment.
Take a self-guided tour of the historic Mission Santa Barbara
that is still in use as a church today. Built in 1786, it is known for its esthetic beauty and considered the "Queen of the Missions."
The site of an active archeological dig, El Presidio de Santa Barbara
is one of the most interesting and significant landmarks in the city. The last of four military fortresses built by the Spanish along the coast, the Santa Barbara Royal Presidio was founded in 1782.
Visit the Nation's First Street Painting Festival.
Started in 1987, Santa Barbara's i Madonnari
is an Italian street painting festival held over the Memorial Day weekend every year. The plaza of the Old Mission is transformed with 200 colorful, large-scale street paintings created by 400 artists (madonnari) and young people. Attracting over 25,000 visitors each year, "the festival also features live music on the Mission lawn and free evening concerts in the church, authentic Italian cuisine and a special street painting area for children."
History of Eastside
Upon the founding of the Royal Presidio
in 1851, Eastside was established as the center of Santa Barbara life and has remained a prime business center and commercial hub.
The Estero, or dry salt marsh, extended from the beach up to the present Santa Barbara High School dominated the Eastside terrain
for nearly a century and a half. During heavy storms, it filled with water transforming into a wet marsh. By the 1860's, strong
interest resulted in reclaiming the rich farmlands from the dry/wet swamp. These bottomlands were fertile and farmed with berries,
vegetables and maize (corn). Milpas, the Spanish term for maize fields, is now used as the name of the neighborhood's primary business street.
The Upper East neighborhood has been a favorite for wealthy residents for over a hundred years. Early
residents preferred building larger homes here because of its proximity to the
Old Mission.
Homes on the Eastside
are distinct in architecture. From Victorian to Mission Revival and Craftsman to Spanish Colonial
Revival, all can be seen within the historic confines of this part of town. The most desirable of them all
is the latter - the Spanish Colonial Revival - with its thick stucco walls, red tile roof and linear,
asymmetrical lines and ornamentation.
